Overview

Andy Weir, widely known for The Martian, wrote the science fiction book Project Hail Mary in 2021. The book combines humor, existential stakes, interplanetary adventure, and rigorous science. Ryland Grace, a lone astronaut on a mission to save Earth from an extinction-level event, is the protagonist of the novel. Grace has to put together his identity and purpose while navigating an unexpected extraterrestrial encounter after waking up alone aboard a spaceship with no memory of who he is or why he is there.

Part One: Awakening

With no recollection of his identity, mission, or location, Ryland Grace awakens in a starship. Beside him, two other crew members have died. He is confused and unsure about his purpose in space. He gradually regains his memories and realizes how important his task is to save Earth.

We discover that a mystery microbe that uses solar energy to multiply and consume it is the cause of the Sun's dimming. This microbe was later termed Astrophage. The reduction in solar output poses a threat of a new ice age, which would wipe out civilization, and astrophage has spread to other stars.

The nearest star Tau Ceti isn't dimming like the others, as Earthly scientists have discovered. As a result, Project Hail Mary is established as a last-ditch effort to find out why. Because of his experience, Ryland, a former molecular biologist who is now a middle school science teacher, is brought on board and plays a vital role in the mission.

Part Two: The Mission Begins

Grace starts to remember more things. He recalls the terrible state of affairs on Earth and the steps taken to build the spacecraft Hail Mary. With Grace and the other three astronauts in hibernation, the ship is transported to Tau Ceti. After the first scientist selected passed away and the mission needed a crew of three, Grace unwillingly joined.

Grace investigates the ship's systems while he gets settled in. He understands that they are in the Tau Ceti system, and that one of their goals is to determine why Tau Ceti is immune to the ravages of Astrophage. Astrophage samples and other research instruments are carried on board the spacecraft.

Part Three: Discovery of Rocky

Grace sees an approaching alien ship when she is doing tests and research close to Tau Ceti. Rocky, a sentient extraterrestrial engineer from the planet Erid, whose sun is also impacted by Astrophage, lives aboard the spacecraft.

Physical engagement is challenging for Rocky's species because it is silicon-based and breaths ammonia. Grace and Rocky start learning each other's languages through gestures, sound frequencies, and math despite their extreme communication gaps. Eventually, they form a close alliance.

Rocky's physiology is entirely different from that of humans because he comes from a high-gravity planet. Nevertheless, the two become close friends. They are united by their common goal: to rescue their own worlds, they must both find a solution to the Astrophage crisis.

Part Four: Science and Problem-Solving

As part of their investigation, Grace and Rocky work together to analyze the Tau Ceti Astrophage samples. They find a predatory microorganism that can eat Astrophage, which they later named Taumoeba. Tau Ceti hasn't diminished because of this organism, which naturally regulates the Astrophage population.

Taumoeba, on the other hand, is sensitive and only grows in particular environments. Due to environmental incompatibilities, Taumoeba dies as Rocky is trying to return it to Erid.

Together, they genetically modify Taumoeba to be more resilient so it can make the journey to both Earth and Erid. While Rocky creates instruments and imparts scientific knowledge about his species, Grace takes on the role of experimental biologist.

Part Five: Ethical Choices and Sacrifice

A crucial problem emerges as the expedition goes on: there is only enough fuel and supplies for one voyage back from Tau Ceti. Grace has to choose between staying behind and returning to Earth with the solution.

During the return preparations, Rocky sustains serious injuries and his spacecraft sustains catastrophic damage. Grace decides to assist his friend even though she is aware that doing so would probably cost him the opportunity to go back home. He forgoes his own chance to return to Earth in order to save Rocky and assist in repairing his ship.

With the modified Taumoeba and the cure to save his people, Rocky departs for Erid. Grace remains in the Tau Ceti system, ready to die but reassured that he was able to save two civilizations.

Part Six: Unexpected Survival

In a shocking change of events, Rocky returns after saving Erid and saves Grace. Rocky keeps Grace alive by using his cutting-edge technologies. As the book comes to a close, Grace is a guest scientist on Rocky's world, living in a habitat created by Eridian. He lives out his days in an alien culture after becoming a teacher.
